SUMMARY:Reclaiming Women's Power in the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join the Women’s Center for Research & Public Policy and the Ina E. Gordy Honors College for the 2026 Martha Swain Lecture.  Dr. Jacqueline Beatty\, Associate Professor of History at York College of Pennsylvania\, will present “Reclaiming Women’s Power in the American Revolution\,” based on research for her book\, In Dependence\, which explores women’s petitions for reprieve\, economic support\, divorce\, and manumission over 70 years stretching before and after the Revolution. In cases from Boston\, Charleston\, and Philadelphia\, she argues that women increasingly asserted rights claims\, though they did so largely within the framework of an apolitical and dependent femininity. The Martha Swain Speaker Series brings a distinguished person to campus each March to address issues important to women’s interests\, lives\, and experiences. This year’s lecture is also part of the America 250 calendar of events celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The series is funded with a gift made in honor of Dr. Martha Swain\, a scholar of Southern women’s history.

SUMMARY:The American Revolution: Short Showing & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library for a preview and panel discussion of The American Revolution\, a new six-part\, 12-hour documentary series that explores the country’s founding struggle and its eight-year War for Independence. Drs. Jon Hooks (Mississippi University for Women) and Judith Ridner (Mississippi State University) will draw on their expertise to set the stage\, and Mississippi Public Broadcasting will screen a summary version of the film. The full film series will premiere on Sunday\, November 16 and air for six consecutive nights through Friday\, November 21st. The much anticipated series\, which has been in production for eight years\, was directed and produced by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt and written by long-time collaborator Geoffrey C. Ward. The filmmakers and PBS scheduled the broadcast for 2025\, the 250th anniversary of the start of the war\, which began in the spring of 1775\, more than a year before the Declaration of Independence.
