Online Education Complaint Process

The W seeks to resolve concerns and complaints fairly and in a timely fashion. Current or prospective MUW students who have a complaint may submit their concerns to the appropriate department as described in Section 7.4 Student Complaint Procedures (http://catalog.muw.edu/content.php?catoid=35&navoid=2152) of the MUW Student Handbook. Students should exhaust internal avenues of complaint resolution prior to pursuing external options.

If a complaint cannot be resolved through the internal complaints process, students may file a complaint with the Mississippi Commission on College Accreditation using the MCCA Student Complaint Form (http://www.mississippi.edu/mcca/downloads/mccastudentcomplaintform.pdf) within two years of the incident. If the complaint is outside of MCCA’s jurisdiction, it may be directed to another agency that is authorized to address the concerns, if appropriate.

Mississippi students taking online courses may also contact the Attorney General:

Mississippi Consumer Protection Division
Office of the Attorney General
State of Mississippi
PO Box 22947
Jackson, Mississippi 39225-2947
Mississippi Consumer Protection Complaint Form

Students may also send concerns to the MUW's regional accrediting agency, SACSCOC, should a complaint not be resolved through the internal complaints process.  The complainant should follow the policy and procedures outlined in SACSCOC Policy Statement: Complaints against SACSCOC or Its Accredited Institutions (http://www.saranc.org/docs/SACSCOC_ComplaintPolicy.pdf).

Students may also contact the appropriate agency in their state of residency. Please use the link below to access a list of agencies, organized by state.

Scheduling a Proctored Exam Online or Face-to-Face

Students in online classes may be asked to take one or more proctored exams over the course of the semester. During a proctored exam your proctor will request to see a photo ID and will observe you and your environment during the test, either in person or over a webcam feed. The W provides access to face-to-face and online proctoring options and students are also welcome to make arrangements for face-to-face proctoring in their home communities if the prospective proctor fits the criteria laid out by their instructor. The cost for proctoring services varies depending on which option you choose, but please be aware that you will need to cover any costs associated with your proctored exams. The W uses Smarter Proctoring to help you locate a proctor and schedule your test date from right inside your Canvas course. If you have trouble with Smarter Proctoring you can contact them for assistance here.

Face-to-Face Proctoring Options

Students who live near The W campus may wish to take advantage of the FREE face-to-face procoting available for our students in the Student Success Center in Reneau Hall. To register, click on the Smarter Proctoring link in your Canvas course navigation menu and select the MUW Proctoring Center to view available dates and times. Please be aware that the W's proctoring center requires students to register at least 10 days in advance of their preferred testing date. If you have questions about the campus proctoring center please contact them at (662) 329-7138 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

If you do not live near campus, your instructor may allow you to choose a face-to-face proctor in your own area. This could be a university or professional testing center, a librarian, a military officer, or other trusted individuals. To locate a proctor near you click on the Smarter Proctoring link in your Canvas course naviation menu and search by zipcode. Please be aware that most proctoring centers charge fees for their services and that you will be responsible for paying those fees. Fees vary by location but you should be able to compare the costs for different centers in Smarter Proctoring before you make your selection.

Online Proctoring Option

Students who do not live near a face-to-face proctoring center or who need greater flexibility in scheduling their test time may want to take advantage of our online proctoring partnership with Examity. During an online proctoring session you will take your exam on your own computer at a location of your choice while interacting with a live proctor over a webcam feed. You will need to have a strong internet connection, a webcam, and a working microphone and speakers to take advantage of this option. The built-in microphone and camera on most laptops should work fine for this purpose or you can purchase a separate webcam and microphone if needed. Please be aware that Examity's online proctoring fees are based on the amount of time it takes for you to complete your exam. The current rate is $10 for the first 30 minutes and $5 for each additional 30 minutes required for you to complete the exam. You are responsible for paying for any equipment and fees necessary for online proctoring if you choose to use this service. Detailed instructions about how to use Examity for online proctoring continue below.
