{"id":1670,"date":"2025-04-17T17:21:22","date_gmt":"2025-04-17T22:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/education\/?p=1670"},"modified":"2025-04-17T17:21:22","modified_gmt":"2025-04-17T22:21:22","slug":"the-ws-school-of-education-hosts-mde-led-hqim-literacy-training-for-future-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/education\/support\/the-ws-school-of-education-hosts-mde-led-hqim-literacy-training-for-future-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"The W\u2019s School of Education Hosts MDE-Led HQIM Literacy Training for Future Teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>COLUMBUS, Miss.\u2014 Mississippi University for Women\u2019s School of Education welcomed representatives from the Mississippi Department of Education\u2019s Office of Elementary Education and Reading on Wednesday, April 16 for a professional training session on High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) and their implementation in literacy-focused regional classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session, led by MDE literacy specialists, provided teacher candidates, faculty, and education stakeholders with an in-depth look at how HQIM aligns with the Science of Reading and how educators can implement curriculum shifts that improve instruction and student outcomes statewide. The session also provided insight into how instructional materials are reviewed, selected, and adopted for their alignment to standards, support for diverse learners, and proven impact on student learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/04\/20250416-DSC09977-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/04\/20250416-DSC09977-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/04\/20250416-DSC09977-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/04\/20250416-DSC09977-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/04\/20250416-DSC09977.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The training is part of The W\u2019s involvement in the Mississippi Educator Preparation Program Literacy (MEPPL) Network, a statewide collaboration focused on improving literacy outcomes through high-quality teacher preparation and coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStronger Together for Literacy isn\u2019t just a motto\u2014it\u2019s a statewide movement,\u201d said Rose Ford, assistant professor of education, structured literacy expert, and LETRS Certified Facilitator. \u201cBy hosting this HQIM session, we\u2019re ensuring our teacher candidates are not only prepared to teach reading effectively, but also ready to lead literacy transformation efforts in Mississippi classrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop, which followed The W\u2019s Spring Awards Day and Education Interview Day, featured a hybrid format to maximize access. Students who attended received door prizes, and several faculty offered extra credit for participation. The event reinforced the School of Education\u2019s leadership in aligning coursework, coaching, and clinical experiences with current statewide initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to preparing teacher candidates, the session offered important professional learning for faculty, enhancing their understanding of state-adopted instructional expectations. By staying current with Mississippi\u2019s evolving educational priorities, faculty are better positioned to equip future educators and respond to the unique needs of the schools and communities they serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis kind of partnership between educator preparation programs and MDE reflects a shared commitment to advancing reading proficiency and student achievement,\u201d said Ford. \u201cWe are proud to prepare future teachers who understand the why, what, and how of high-quality instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About The W\u2019s School of Education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mississippi University for Women\u2019s School of Education has led lifelong learning for over 140 years.
