Undergraduate Educator Preparation Program Progression

STEP 1:  Be Admitted into The W

Apply to The W. If you have any questions about the admissions process or items needed for admission into the university, please contact Admissions at (662) 329-7106. During the admission process, you will declare your major of study.

STEP 2:  Meet with Your Advisor

Your advisor will discuss the required courses and a degree plan for your individual needs. Advisors are here to help you obtain your teaching goals, so please feel comfortable to contact them with any questions or concerns about your program. If you do not have an advisor or you are not sure who your advisor might be, please contact Jewel Bishop at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

STEP 3:  Complete Your Core Classes and Pass the Praxis Core or Obtain a Composite ACT Score of 21 or Higher or Earned GPA 3.0 or Higher

During registration time, you will meet with your advisor to determine which courses are available for you to take in the coming semester. If you are transferring into The W from another college, you may have already completed most of your core classes. It is recommended that you complete the core classes before you begin your major classes. The Mississippi Department of Education states that a student must have passing Praxis Core scores or a composite score of 21 or higher on the ACT or earned GPA 3.0 or higher for a student to obtain the Student Teaching 101 License. This requirement must be met prior to admittance into the Teacher Education Program and enrollment in Methods courses, which are generally taken in the first semester of your senior year.

STEP 4:  Be Admitted to the Teacher Education Program

When you meet the following requirements, you will be able to apply for the Teacher Education Program:

  • Criminal Background Check

  • Minimum grade of "B" in ED 361, ED 362, and ED 366 for Elementary Education majors

  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.75
  • Passing scores on Praxis CORE or ACT composite score of 21 or higher or earned GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Beginning August 2020, education students may repeat an education course or core required course once

Once you meet the requirements, contact your advisor to obtain the instructions for completing the application to the Teacher Education Program.
