Bebe Roberts Freeman Scholarship

The Bebe Roberts Freeman Scholarship is awarded annually on a competitive basis to incoming community college transfer students to the School of Education’s Anchor Points program. This unique scholarship opportunity awards $2,000 per year to help an Elementary Education major with academic-related expenses. The Bebe Roberts Freeman Scholarship may be stacked with other scholarship awards from The W or outside sources. In other words, winning another scholarship will not make you ineligible for the Bebe Roberts Freeman Scholarship, nor will it reduce your total award amount from the university. Your total combined scholarship package may not exceed the annual cost of attendance as defined each year by the university.

While preference for awarding the Bebe Roberts Freeman Scholarship will be granted to incoming community college transfer students entering the School of Education’s Anchor Points program, all W Elementary Education transfer students meeting minimum criteria are encouraged to apply each year. The recipient shall meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Be Admitted to The W
  • Be a graduate of a Mississippi public high school
  • Be a transfer student from a Mississippi community college
  • Be a student applying for admittance to teacher education as an Elementary Education major
  • Intend to teach in a Mississippi public school

Applicants should address the following in the application’s purpose statement: In what ways does the applicant hope to improve education for Mississippi’s children?

Students who meet the qualifications should ask their Anchor Points navigator at The W for the scholarship application.

Yes, as long as one of those majors is Elementary Education.
  • Will winning a Freeman scholarship affect my eligibility for other scholarships? +

The Bebe Roberts Freeman Scholarship may be stacked with other scholarship awards from The W or outside sources. In other words, winning another scholarship will not make you ineligible for a Freeman scholarship, nor will it reduce your award amount from the university. Your total combined scholarship package may not exceed the annual cost of attendance as defined each year by the university. To learn how winning a Freeman scholarship may affect your eligibility for external scholarships (i.e. those not from The W), you should consult those external scholarship organizations.
