Megan Davies

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- The Mississippi University for Women Alumni Association recently announced Megan Davies of Hamilton, Ala., as the recipient of the 2015 Culinary Arts Advisory Board Scholarship.

Davies, an incoming freshman from Hamilton High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science in culinary arts. “My ultimate career goal is to create a nonprofit restaurant for the needy—where people are given the dignity to sit down and order from a menu instead of standing in line and eating off Styrofoam plates,” she said. “Through The W, I know that I can achieve my career goal.”

Davies discovered The W’s Culinary Arts Institute through her cousin, Rich Sobolewski, a W graduate who now serves as the university’s web communications director. “…he always spoke so highly of the campus and the people,” Davies said.

The annual scholarship has been endowed since 2012 and is available to full-time enrolled freshmen or sophomores majoring in culinary arts. In addition to meeting specific criteria, applicants are also required to write a 250-word essay addressing “why you deserve the scholarship and overall career goals.”

In addition to her career goals, Davies also shared how moving several times for her father’s service in the Navy made her a stronger person. “Constantly transferring schools motivated me to try harder, become a better student and successfully deal with stress that many people are unaccustomed to.”

Amy Tate, president of the MUW Alumni Association, said she’s looking forward to Davies calling The W home for the next four years. “We congratulate Megan on being awarded the Culinary Arts Advisory Board Scholarship and look forward to seeing what she can accomplish while at The W,” Tate said. “She will be a wonderful asset to the university and the culinary arts program.”
