Message from the Chair

 David Carter

I am delighted to learn of your interest in attending Mississippi University for Women and in our theatre program. Our program offers the small classes typical of MUW, classes which offer students the individual attention appropriate to a liberal arts education.

The MUW Theatre Program offers complete coursework in the theoretical and practical aspects in the art of making theatre. The Program offers a BA in Fine Arts with a Theatre Emphasis, and its hallmarks are a rigorous production schedule, individual attention throughout the training process, and first-rate production values. Productions include classics, contemporary titles of all genres, and the occasional musical.

MUW Theatre has a history of active participation in the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival, Southeastern Theatre Conference, and the Mississippi Theatre Association.

MUW Theatre students acquire a broad understanding of theatre as a liberal art, a strong sense of self, and the competitive skills with which to pursue professional or graduate work. The MUW Theatre Program is designed for the serious student with the desire to work in a company atmosphere.

The Department is housed in Cromwell Communication Center which includes a well-equipped 300-seat black box theatre and an 80-seat studio space. While at MUW, theatre students can act, design, direct, and have their own plays produced. There are plenty of opportunities for you to excel in the theatre program here at MUW. Our graduates go on to continue their education in graduate school or enter into the professional theatre workforce.

I invite you to browse our website, visit our beautiful campus, and come to one of our many performances.

As you begin to make choices about where to attend college, I hope you will consider Mississippi University for Women. (Remember, we’ve been admitting men since 1982.)
