SUMMARY:Film Screening & Costume Contest: "The Soul of All America"
DESCRIPTION:Mississippi University for Women presents “The Soul of All America\,” the fifth episode from the new Ken Burns documentary\, The American Revolution\, but this time\, we’re dressing up for Halloween! Come in your most authentic Revolutionary garb; the best-dressed patriot will win a prize! \nThe fifth episode covers the period from December 1777 through May 1780. George Washington and the Continental Army spend the winter at Valley Forge\, Pennsylvania. Conditions are horrible. Many soldiers are sick\, clothing is scarce\, and men go for days with barely any food. People die\, and as morale plummets\, other men simply go home. There is talk of mutiny. Slowly\, Washington turns things around\, but the French-American alliance changes the war and moves it to other theaters:  the sea\, in Indian Country\, and in the South. Navies battle off England and in the Caribbean\, while armies advance in Indian Country and the South; the British take Charleston. Learn more about the episode\, the key players\, and critical documents at PBS. \nThe entire documentary is 6 episodes total with each episode running approximately 2 hours in length. The W is showing all episodes throughout 2026. \nAdmission is free and open to the public. This event is part of the America 250 series of special events co-sponsored by Mississippi University for Women\, the Mississippi School for Math and Science\, and the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library. The series provides opportunities to reflect on the American experiment as we mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. \nFor more information\, call the MUW Department of History\, Political Science\, and Geography at (662) 329-7390.

SUMMARY:Citizens Revival: Film Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Mississippi School for Math & Science and The W’s Department of History\, Political Science\, & Geography are excited to welcome filmmaker Becca Finley to campus for a screening of her newest film\, Citizens Revival. The film screening will begin just after 6:00 pm in Nissan Auditorium and will be followed by a half hour of Q&A with the director. \nUsing a combination of cinema verité\, traditional interviews\, collaborative live events\, and subject-led discussions\, Citizens Revival shines a light on the diverse ways in which Americans are thinking about civic participation and what education for democratic citizenship should look like today. Filmed across the country during the 2024 presidential election season\, the film features 120 different voices–40 Republicans\, 40 Democrats\, and 40 Independents–and showcases opportunities for each of us to be more engaged. \nBecca Finley is a seasoned director of television\, digital\, and film content with a focus on conscious community\, democracy\, and the arts. Her 30-year history in live event production\, publishing\, festival programming\, nonprofits\, and theatre has allowed for a career that spans across the globe in multiple genres. She serves as the Artistic Director of the Oxford Film Festival and has earned multiple awards and recognitions for her work\, including a 2022 regional Emmy nomination for her FEMA Hazard Series and selection as a Media Arts Fellow by the Mississippi Arts Commission. \nThis event is part of the America 250 series of special events co-sponsored by Mississippi University for Women\, the Mississippi School for Math and Science\, and the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library. The series provides opportunities to reflect on the American experiment as we mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
