SUMMARY:Public Talk: "Making It Personal: Reading the Correspondence Between Lydia Maria Child and Gov. Wise and Mrs. Mason\, of Virginia"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bonnie O’Neill will present “Making It Personal: Reading the Correspondence Between Lydia Marie Child and Gov. Wise and Mrs. Mason\, of Virginia” in September 28\, 2026\, at the downtown branch of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System. \nIn the weeks following John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry\, newspapers published a clutch of letters between the well-known abolitionist Lydia Maria Child\, Virginia Governor Henry Wise\, and Margaretta Mason\, the wife of a Virginia Senator. Widely reprinted in both northern and southern papers\, the letters revisited familiar arguments on both sides of the slavery debate. More than that\, they addressed the perennial question of how Americans ought to discuss controversial political issues—and who gets to participate in those discussions. These letters reveal the intensely personal nature of public life in a time of national crisis and the incivility that presaged armed conflict. \nDr. Bonnie O’Neill is professor of English at Mississippi State University. She is the author of “Literary Celebrity and Public Life in the Nineteenth-Century United States” (Georgia\, 2017)\, which explores how an expanding celebrity culture affected authorship and civic discourse. \nThis program is sponsored by a Mississippi Humanities Council America 250 Grant and is part of the America 250 series of special events co-sponsored by Mississippi University for Women\, the Mississippi School for Math and Science\, and the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library. The series provides opportunities to reflect on the American experiment as we mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. \nFor more information\, call the CLPLS at 662-329-5300.

SUMMARY:Martha Swain Lecture: Reclaiming Women's Power in the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join the Women’s Center for Research & Public Policy and the Ina E. Gordy Honors College for the 2026 Martha Swain Lecture.  Dr. Jacqueline Beatty\, Associate Professor of History at York College of Pennsylvania\, will present “Reclaiming Women’s Power in the American Revolution\,” based on research for her book\, In Dependence\, which explores women’s petitions for reprieve\, economic support\, divorce\, and manumission over 70 years stretching before and after the Revolution. In cases from Boston\, Charleston\, and Philadelphia\, she argues that women increasingly asserted rights claims\, though they did so largely within the framework of an apolitical and dependent femininity. \nThe Martha Swain Speaker Series brings a distinguished person to campus each March to address issues important to women’s interests\, lives\, and experiences. This year’s lecture is also part of the America 250 calendar of events celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The series is funded with a gift made in honor of Dr. Martha Swain\, a scholar of Southern women’s history.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Daphne Chamberlain will present The Emmett Till Generation: Youth Activism\, Radical Protest\, and Social Change in Jim Crow South on February 19 at 12 noon at the downtown branch of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System. \nThis presentation highlights the role of children\, between the ages of 7 and 18\, as leaders and participants in the Mississippi civil rights movement from 1946 to 1965. This presentation also offers a new perspective on the origins of the civil rights struggle and gives credence to how instrumental young people were to engaging in radical protest and grassroots activism in Mississippi. \nDr. Daphne Chamberlain is a native of Columbus\, Mississippi. She attended historic Tougaloo College where she completed her undergraduate studies in History\, and she subsequently received her Master’s and Ph.D. in History from the University of Mississippi.
