COLUMBUS, Miss.-- The sixth annual international Music by Women Festival will return to the campus of Mississippi University for Women March 3-5. After a virtual conference in 2021, Music by Women will feature in-person concerts of new and historic music written by women composers within historic Poindexter Hall.
“We are honored and excited to host a musical event of such magnitude,” said Dr. Julia Mortyakova, The W’s Department of Music chair and artistic director for the Music by Women Festival. “The festival concerts will feature performances of the highest caliber and will allow the audience a small glimpse into the vast body of work composed by women.”
As part of the festival, 15 concerts will be presented. Each day concerts will be held at 10 a.m., noon, 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. All festival concerts are free and open to the public. Between the concerts lecture-recitals, papers will be presented.
More than 150 renowned performers and scholars from different parts of the world will gather to celebrate the musical contributions of women. University faculty from top research institutions and conservatories can be heard on the festival program. Some of the artists from this year include music faculty from the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, DePaul University, University of West Florida, Auburn University, Louisiana State University, Florida State University, University of Alabama and University of Oregon.
Mortyakova said,” Many past festival participants are looking forward to being back on the W campus.”
Concert and events will be live streamed to the festival website.
