{"id":100,"date":"2020-09-28T09:19:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-28T14:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/archive\/?p=100"},"modified":"2025-01-14T09:21:41","modified_gmt":"2025-01-14T15:21:41","slug":"september-28-a-message-of-encouragement-from-the-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/archive\/letter-from-the-president\/september-28-a-message-of-encouragement-from-the-president\/","title":{"rendered":"September 28 &#8211; A message of encouragement from the President"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Update September 28, 2020 &#8211; President Nora Miller has released a video message to the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" id=\"system-readmore\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"COVID 19 Mask and Voting Update\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9wtOHS6XB_o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s message is meant to be one of encouragement!&nbsp; Well, actually more like 5 messages of encouragement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I want to encourage you to keep up the good work.\u00a0 If you look at the case tracker, we have only two active cases of COVID.\u00a0 One student and one employee.\u00a0 Thank you for doing your part and keeping our campus healthy.<br><br>We are proud to be known as a caring community.\u00a0 We care about each other\u2019s health and our own, which is why we will continue to encourage everyone to Be WISE and Stay Safe.\u00a0 Follow our campus renewal plan protocols.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know whether the Governor will extend his executive order requiring that masks be worn, but on this campus, we will continue to require masks.\u00a0 I know it\u2019s hard to grasp that masks don\u2019t have to be worn in the cafeteria while you are eating, but they\u2019re required everywhere else, unless you are alone in your personal workspace or housing.\u00a0 Please continue to you\u2019re your mask \u2013 both on campus and off.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I want to encourage all of us to be kind and have empathy for others.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know what all is going on in each other\u2019s lives \u2013 but I\u2019m pretty sure we are all dealing with heightened stress, and being behind a mask makes it that much harder to see what\u2019s going on.\u00a0 So, if you see someone without a mask, remember that they may have a medical reason that they can\u2019t wear a mask, or they may have forgotten to grab one before they left their room or their car.\u00a0 Keep your physical distance from them, perhaps tell them that you are not comfortable being within 6 feet of them if they\u2019re not wearing a mask.\u00a0 You probably aren\u2019t going to help matters by being confrontational.\u00a0 Now, if this is a repetitive issue and there is someone who willfully refuses to wear a mask, then it may end up being a student judiciary issue, or a personnel matter.\u00a0 Remember \u2013 we all took our Safe Owls Pledge!<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take good care of yourself to deal with the stress of everything.\u00a0 Get some exercise, get outside on a pretty day, keep in touch with friends and family.\u00a0 Students, call the Counseling Center if you want to talk things over with a counselor.\u00a0 Employees, remember the Employee Assistance Program is available for you AND for anyone else in your household.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I want to encourage students to keep up their work in the classroom.\u00a0 We are nearing mid-term, so lean in and be prepared to finish strong.\u00a0 If you are having trouble in a class, reach out for help.\u00a0 Make an appointment to meet with your faculty and talk about how you can improve.\u00a0 Contact the Student Success Center about some tutoring sessions.\u00a0 In virtual classes it\u2019s probably a little more difficult to have an after class conversation with your classmates to suggest you study together.\u00a0 Make the effort to reach out to your fellow students.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And for the fifth and final encouragement for today \u2013 October 5 is the deadline to register to vote and be able to participate in the November election.\u00a0 If you are not registered \u2013 do so.\u00a0 And then, do what my mask tells you to do.\u00a0 VOTE!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Nora Miller<br>President, Mississippi University for Women<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Update September 28, 2020 &#8211; President Nora Miller has released a video message to the university.
