The Undergraduate Curriculum Council met on November 7, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. in the Welty Boardroom. We did not meet in October because no proposals were submitted. The minutes of September 5, 2008 meeting were approved by a unanimous vote.
University Administration Actions
Dr. Limbert approved the Council Actions from the September meeting concerning the following:
1. Modification of an Existing Curriculum in Microbiology from the College of Arts and Sciences
2. Creation of a New Course – BSB 346 Evolutionary Biology
3. Modification of an Existing Course – BSB 485 Special Topics in Biology of Microbiology
4. Create a New Degree Program – General Studies
Council Actions for November 7, 2008:
College of Arts and Sciences
1. Information item –BSB 485 Special Topics in Biology or Microbiology
Dorothy Kerzel presented clarification of changes in credit hours for BSB 485, which was approved by UCC in September. Since BSB 485 may be repeated twice with earned credit each time, new language should be included to allow a student to take two different topics for four hours each. Previous language stated “May be repeated for a maximum of six hours credit” would change to “May be repeated for a maximum of eight hours credit”. The
2. Modify an Existing Course – Microbiology for Majors
Dorothy Kerzel presented a proposal to renumber BSM 240 to BSM 340. This
modification would reduce confusion for students transferring Microbiology
course from community colleges and align course material to prepare students
for more advanced microbiology courses. Maggie McClintock made the
motion to accept the proposal as presented. Amanda Dahl seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously.
3. Modify an Existing Course – PSC 111 General Chemistry I
Dorothy Kerzel presented a proposal to change math prerequisites/co requisite
for PSC 111 General Chemistry. The change would allow students to be
concurrently enrolled in an appropriate mathematics class and PSC 111.
Amanda Dahl made the motion to accept the proposal as presented. Judy
Raymond seconded the motion. The motion was passed unanimously.
College of Education & Human Sciences
1. Information item – Exercise Science and Exercise Science PT
Mark Bean presented a request related to Exercise Science and Exercise
Science PT grade point average requirement. The “2.5 qpa in required HK
courses” should be removed from the degree audit sheet since the department
approved a “C or better in all major courses” approximately two years ago.
2. Offer a New Course – GS 400 General Studies Seminar
Mark Bean presented the proposal to offer a capstone course to the General
Studies degree program. The course taken during the final term of attendance
would prepare students to enter the workplace with a portfolio of work
acquired through the General Studied academic program. Cay Lollar made the
motion to accept the proposal with the Effective Date changed to Spring 2009.
Marty Hatton seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously
