The Undergraduate Curriculum Council met on December 1, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. in the Welty Boardroom.  The minutes of November 3, 2006, were approved by a unanimous vote. 

University Administration Actions

Dr. Limbert approved the Council Actions from the November meeting concerning the following:

  1. Proposal to Modify HIS 328 by changing the course title from “Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages” to “Rise of Christianity and the Fall of Rome 200-1000” was approved with the following changes:  The course description should include the phrase “including the rise of Christianity” at the end of the first sentence.  Also with an effective date of Fall 2007.
  2. Proposal to Delete HIS 470 “The Renaissance:  Defining the Problem” was approved with the following changes:  The effective date should be Fall 2007.
  3. Proposal to Modify COM 454 “Problems in Mass Communication” by making the course repeatable for up to six hours credit was approved with the following changes:  The course will be offered for variable credit (1-3 hours) along with being repeatable for up to six hours credit.
  4. Proposal to Modify BU 160 “Spreadsheet Applications” by removing MA 113 “College Algebra” as a prerequisite was approved as presented.
  5. Proposal to Modify BU 265 “Database Applications” by changing the course number to BU 320 was approved with the following changes:  Prerequisite BU 160 and pre- or co-requisite BU 298 or permission of the instructor.
  6. Proposal to Modify BU 470 “System Analysis and Design” by removing the co-requisite of BU 482 and adding prerequisites of BU 294 and BU 298 was approved as presented.
  1. Proposal to Modify BU 482 “Database Program Development” by changing the prerequisites from BU 298 and co-requisite BU 470 to prerequisite BU 320 (formerly BU 265, see #5 above) and co-requisite BU 470 was approved with the following changes:  Prerequisite BU 320 (formerly BU 265, see #5 above) and prerequisite or concurrent enrollment in BU 470.
  2. Proposal to Modify the MIS minor by adding BU 160 (for non-Business majors only), replacing BU 295 with BU 298, replacing BU 390 with “select one from the following: BU 295, BU 296, or BU 390”, replacing BU 396 with BU 320 (formerly BU 265, see #5 above), and adding BU 470 was approved with the following changes:  BU 160 will not be included in the minor requirements.  Also this action can only be made pending Dr. Limbert’s approval of the modification to BU 265 to BU 320.

Council Actions 

College of Arts and Sciences 

Geography - Dr. Patricia Dennis presented the following modifications for the Department of Geography: 

-         Proposal to Offer a New Course – GEO 306 Geography of the Muslim World 

This has been taught twice as a special topics course.  Pat Donat made the motion to accept the proposal as requested with the prerequisite to read “GEO 101 recommended or permission of the department chair.”  Barbara Hunt seconded the motion.  Motion passed. 

Science and Mathematics – Dr. Dionne Fortenberry presented the following modifications to the Chemistry curriculum: 

-          Proposal to Modify an Existing Curriculum – Chemistry Minor 

The proposed changes will attract more students and give them more choices and opportunities without changing the number of hours.  The modification will add PSC 450, PSC 451, and PSC 490 to the list of “Select One” courses.

Cay Lollar made the motion to accept the proposal as requested.  Barbara Hunt seconded the motion.  Motion passed.


Dr. Dorothy Kerzel presented the following modifications to the Biology curriculum: 

-          Proposal to Modify an Existing Curriculum – Biology – Teacher Certification 

This proposal is adding BSB 351 to the list of “Select One” courses.  Rebecca Kelly made the motion to accept the proposal as requested.  Rex Bruington seconded the motion.  Motion passed.

ommunications – Dr. Marty Hatton presented the following modifications: 

-          Proposal to Offer a New Course – COM 299 Special Topics in Communication 

Pat Donat made the motion to accept the proposal with the following changes:    The effective date will be changed to Fall 2007.  The course will be offered for variable credit (1-3 hours) and will be repeatable for up to six hours.  The prerequisite will read “permission of the department chair.”  Also, the course description will read “The course allows flexibility in offering selected topics in Communications.”  Cay Lollar seconded the motion.  Motion passed. 

-          Proposal to Offer a New Course – COM 499 Special Topics in Communication 

Cay Lollar made the motion to accept the proposal with the following changes:    The effective date will be Fall 2007.  The course will be offered for variable credit (1-3 hours) and will be repeatable for up to six hours.  The prerequisites will be advanced standing, COM 200, and permission of the department chair.  Also the course description will read “The course allows flexibility in offering advanced topics in Communications.”   Rebecca Kelly seconded the motion.  Motion passed. 

-          Proposal to Offer a New Course – COM 310 Digital Culture 

Barbara Hunt made the motion to accept the proposal with the following changes: The effective date will be Fall 2007.  The course description will read “This course examines the development, uses, and effects of digital technology on culture.”  Pat Donat seconded the motion.  Motion passed.

-          Proposal to Modify an Existing Course – COM 401/402 Practicum 

Cay Lollar made the motion to accept the proposal to Modify COM 401/402 by changing the course number to COM 400 with the following changes:  The effective date will be Fall 2007.  The course will be repeatable for up to two hours.  Also, the course description will read “Practical experience will be gained through assigned work with WMUW, the university radio station, The Spectator, the campus newspaper, and other campus labs or offices such as the Public Affairs Office.”  Rex Bruington seconded the motion.  Motion passed. 

-           Proposal to Offer a New Course – COM 410 Media Law & Ethics 

Barbara Hunt made the motion to accept the proposal with the following changes:  The effective date will be Fall 2007.  Dee Dee Larson seconded the motion.  Motion passed.

 -          Proposal to Offer a New Course – COM 425 Advanced Visual Design 

Rebecca Kelly made the motion to accept the proposal with the following changes:  The effective date will be Fall 2007.  Pat Donat seconded the motion.  Motion passed. 

College of Business

Dee Dee Larson presented the following proposal from Business: 

-          Proposal to Inactivate/Reactivate an Existing Course – BU 301 Consumer Economics 

Cay Lollar made the motion to accept the proposal as presented.  Dee Dee Larson seconded the motion.  Motion passed. 

-          Proposal to Offer a New Course – BU 240 Personal Finance 

Rochelle Hughes made the motion to accept the proposal as presented.  Rex Bruington seconded the motion.  Motion passed.

 
Rex Bruington presented the following proposals:

-          Proposal to Modify an Existing Course – BU 398 Network Operations Management

This modification includes changing the prerequisite from BU 396 to BU 294.  Rex Bruington made the motion to accept the proposal as presented.  Dee Dee Larson seconded the motion.  Motion passed. 

-          Proposal to Modify an Existing Course – BU 320 Database Applications 

The modifications to this course include changing the prerequisite from BU 160 and BU 298 (prerequisite or co-requisite) or permission of instructor to BU 160 and BU 294.  Rebecca Kelly made the motion to accept the proposal as presented.  Rex Bruington seconded the motion.  Motion passed.

College of Education & Human Sciences

Mark Bean presented the following proposals for Health & Kinesiology

-          Proposal to Modify an Existing Curriculum – HK – Teacher Education

The modification to this curriculum included removing HK 340 from the list of core requirements and adding a choice of HK 307 or 308.  Cay Lollar made the motion to accept the proposal as presented.  Dee Dee Larson seconded the motion.  Motion passed. 

-          Proposal to Offer a New Course – HKC 138 Advanced Pilates 

Pat Donat made the motion to accept the proposal as presented.  Rebecca Kelly seconded the motion.  Motion passed. 

-          Proposal to Offer a New Course – HKC 257 Fitness and Wellness for Healthcare Practitioners 

This proposal was withdrawn at this time.


Holly Krogh presented the following proposals for Psychology: 

-          Proposal to Modify an Existing Course – PSY 454 Applied Statistics 

This proposal to modify PSY 454 by removing the prerequisite of PSY201 was tabled at this time. 

-          Proposal to Modify an Existing Course – PSY 201 Introduction to APA Style 

Pat Donat made the motion to accept the proposal with the following changes:  The effective date will be Fall 2007.  Rebecca Kelly seconded the motion.  Motion passed.

-          Proposal to Offer a New Course – PSY 425 Gender Development 

Cay Lollar made the motion to accept the proposal with the following changes:  The prerequisite will be PSY 302 or permission of the department chair and the effective date will be Fall 2007.  Barbara Hunt seconded the motion.  Motion passed.

Old Business

New Business

The UCC will meet in January instead of February.  Deadline for submitting proposals for this meeting will be January 16.  Lisa will ask Dr. Richardson to notify the Deans/Directors of the meeting changes and due dates.

Catalog copy will go to the deans next week.  Editorials will be due by February.

Cay will get Lisa the new forms so they can be put on the website.  Lisa will get Stephen to remove the old UCC web page.
