Council Actions

College of Education and Human Sciences

-          Proposal to Offer a New Course – HKC 180  Fitness and Wellness I

-          Proposal to Offer a New Course – HKC 181  Fitness and Wellness II

Mark Bean presented a proposal to offer two one-hour online activity courses targeted for Tupelo Nursing but available to all students to meet core requirements.  They can be taken concurrently although they are limited to online students and for those who have no other means to meet the core requirement.  This would also help with wheelchair- bound students to complete the requirement rather than have a waiver.

Pat Donat made the motion to accept the proposals with the following changes:  deletion of the first sentence in both proposals concerning it being online and for distance learning, addition of learning objectives that specify active engagement, and effective Fall 2008.  If approved, the courses will be submitted to the Core Curriculum Council.

College of Business

-          Information Item – Clarification of Program Requirements  - tabled until the September meeting.

 Honors

             -          Proposal to Offer a New Course – HO 150  Great Books I:  The Ancient World

-          Proposal to Offer a New Course – HO 152  Great Books II:  The Judeo, Christian, and Islamic Traditions

As we have more students come with AP or dual enrollment credit, there is a need to modify the curriculum in order to meet the requirements.  Eric Daffron presented two proposals to begin the ‘Great Books/Ideas’ series that will serve as the General Education requirement. Although these courses are primarily for Honors students, others students may take these courses with the director’s permission.

Cay Lollar made a motion with a second from Barbara Hunt, to accept both proposals with the following changes to both:  the prerequisite should be changed to “prerequisite or concurrent enrollment in EN 101.  The student should also be in the Honors program or have the permission of the Director of the Honors College.” Information concerning future inclusion in the University Core and possible substitutions for Core courses will be removed from the UCC proposal.  The revised proposal will be sent to the Provost’s Office to be included in the UCC files.  The course will be submitted to the CCC for inclusion in the University Core.  The proposal passed unanimously.
