"Assessment can help us focus
our collective attention, examine our assumptions, and create a shared academic
culture dedicated to assuring and improving the quality of higher education.”
Thomas A. Angelo
Beginning fall 2008, MUW launched a new assessment initiative focused on student
learning outcomes on the programmatic level. Student Learning Outcomes
Assessment is one tool among many that assists departments in the ongoing task
of improving the quality of instruction that we provide to our students. In
order to focus more attention on the role of assessment in over-all academic
effectiveness, MUW established an annual day, Assessment Day, set aside
to build knowledge about assessment through workshops and provide time for
departments to meet, review their assessment data, and discuss ways to
improve the student learning experiences in their programs. The
Assessment Day initiative is part of a comprehensive and coordinated effort that
uses student learning as an indicator of program effectiveness. Our initiatives
are focused upon student-learning outcomes assessment in the academic units
and the use of assessment information to improve learning across the
curriculum.
