The SWI provides exemplary
programs and services to the university, community and
southern region over an eighteen month period. Our
programs enhance and supplement existing MUW women's studies
academic programs and provide outreach to others. The
Institute's work supports the teaching mission of the
institution and will coordinate with other campus units such
as the Honors College, the International Series, the Ray
Furr Workshop, the Women's Health Awareness Week, and the
art exhibits and musical performances sponsored by Fine
Arts. The SWI aligns student learning goals and
educational needs, provides opportunities for students to
achieve these goals, and provides forums to facilitate
learning opportunities.
Guest Speaker Lecture
Series: Corporate, educational and non-profit
women leaders will be invited to campus to present lectures
on their work to increase the visibility of role models.
Women's Leadership
Conference: Community service, academic committee
work, mentoring, and professional contributions are integral
to leadership. The conference provides women with the
opportunity to practice leadership skills while receiving
learning and networking support. Topics includes
decision making, the history of women's leadership roles,
leadership styles, entrepreneurship, technology, and career
development.
Writer-in-Residence
and the Eudora Welty Weekend: The symposium
honors one of MUW's best-known and best-loved alumnae,
Eudora Welty. A writer from the symposium is invited
to remain on campus for an additional week to participate in
classes, informal meetings with students, public interviews,
and readings from their works.
MUW Faculty and Student
Fellow Program: Faculty may apply for mini-grants
for enhancement of the undergraduate women's studies
courses. Student grants encourage research and faculty
and student interaction and collaboration on women's issues.
Networking Dinners:
Dinners with students, faculty, and women leaders encourage
conversation and provide an unparalleled opportunity to
support a highly personalized approach to undergraduate
education.
Golden Girl Histories:
Students are trained to conduct and document personal
stories of what MUW means to those who have attended.
A historic collection of their stories is published.
Community Seminar Series:
Seminars about economic literacy, fundamentals of starting a
business, women and investing, health issues, public policy
affecting women, parenting support, and women and the arts
enhance the visibility of accomplished females and provide
information to the general public.
