MUW belongs to the National
Student Exchange (NSE), a domestic parallel to study abroad. This
program, now in its fortieth year, offers nearly 200 university
exchange sites in 48 states, 3 U.S. territories, the District of
Columbia, and 6 Canadian provinces. NSE gives eligible students an
opportunity to experience a different area of the country with its
unique cultural and academic opportunities. Since NSE's beginning in
1968, more than 90,000 students have participated in the program.
Students utilize NSE to:
- explore and
appreciate new cultures
- take courses not
offered at our campus
- learn from different
professors
- explore new areas of
study
- break out of comfort
zones
- expand academic
program options
- access courses with
different perspectives
- investigate graduate
schools or employment
opportunities
- broaden educational horizens
Eligibility
requirements include:
- 2.5 cumulative GPA
- full-time status
- good standing (financially,
academically, behaviorally)
- sophomore, junior, or senior
classification while on exchange
Depending
on the host campus and the payment plan that you select, you will pay
tuition and fees either to MUW or to the host campus. You will always
pay housing and course participation fees to the host campus, and you
will apply for any financial aid for which you qualify and that is
available at MUW.

If you would like
to attend this program, please follow this recommended timetable:
1. Make an
appointment with
Dr.
Daffron, the NSE Coordinator, early in the
semester
prior to the semester in which you plan to attend the program. You
should also consult with your academic advisor and your financial aid
advisor about the academic and financial feasibility of the program. If the
program
seems like a good fit for your goals, submit the on-campus NSE
application. The non-refundable application fee is $95.
2. Once
your on-campus application has been approved, you must be placed. NSE
requires a placement process, which typically occurs in March of each
year, though placements may occur throughout the year.
3. If you are successfully placed, get program
materials
from Dr. Daffron and submit to Dr. Daffron any materials that go
directly to your host campus.
4. Make an
appointment with
your
academic advisor. At that meeting, review course
descriptions, and ask your advisor to fill out course
transfer forms for the courses that you plan to take and to
send
those forms through the
proper
academic channels.
5. Make an
appointment with
your
financial aid advisor if you plan to use federal financial aid.
At
that meeting, review the cost breakdown, and ask your advisor to help
you plan
for an increased financial aid package if appropriate. Also, make
plans with
your advisor for filling out federal financial aid forms for the next
academic
year because you may be out of the country when they are due. Finally,
ask Dr. Daffron about the availability of study abroad scholarships.
6. At
pre-registration for the
semester
in which you plan to attend, sign up for UN 390: NSE for the
appropriate
number of hours. This course will serve as a placeholder for you
in computer for federal financial aid and enrollment purposes.
7. If you are paying MUW tuition and fees, you must
finalize your fees as usual. If you are paying your host campus's
tuition and fees, you must pay your host campus on the appropriate
date. Either way, you must pay housing and other fees at your host
campus on the appropriate date.
8. Before departure, you must sign a liability
waiver.
9. If you make any changes to your schedule while
abroad,
you must notify your advisor and me. Unless you fill out a new
course transfer form and it gets accepted, you may not receive proper
transfer credit.
10. Upon returning
from the program, make sure that the Registrar’s Office has received a
copy of
your
transcript and that you have received appropriate
credit.
You will receive an S or a U for UN 390.
