History

Mississippi University for Women has a long and well-established track record of providing K-12 education outreach to various groups in northeast Mississippi. The Department of Sciences and Mathematics is no exception, with its many faculty-initiated programs, some of which have been supported by grants.

The Science Enrichment Program traces its history back to 2005 when MUW was awarded a U.S. Department of Education grant entitled “Plymouth Bluff Center for Scientific and Historical Enrichment”.  This grant was administered out of the Department of Sciences and Mathematics with the primary goal being to involve local K-12 students in various hands-on science activities that would enhance their understanding of scientific procedures and the natural world.  Many workshops were held at the Plymouth Bluff Center and on the custom built pontoon boat which serves as a floating laboratory on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway for both students and teachers.  Most workshops focused on middle school students, and “Fridays on the Waterways” was a popular program among area students and teachers.

Since then the program was expanded to include a greater number of high quality workshops for teachers as well as students.  Several workshops were held in 2008 at Plymouth Bluff Center on topics such as water chemistry, microbiology, ecology, and data analysis.   Student opportunities were also provided during the summer of 2008 using the pontoon boat and Plymouth Bluff Center.

Mr. Kenny Langley, Project Coordinator, is responsible for the current program offerings.  The Science Enrichment Program offers an annual calendar of science outreach opportunities for K-12 students and teachers.  Dr. Dorothy Kerzel, Project Director, administers the program.  To learn more about program personnel, visit the “people” section of our website.
