Goals

We are in the process of establishing a regular calendar of workshops for teachers and students throughout the year.

Each spring and fall, we will offer workshops on selected Saturdays for science teachers on various topics.  Every attempt will be made to offer continuing education units (CEUs), and as funding allows, a stipend.  All workshops will offer college-style refresher training and hands-on activities for a wide range of topics including physics, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, ecology, botany, microbiology, statistics, genetics, geology, astronomy, and hydrologic topics.  Most workshops will be designed to present age/grade-appropriate material and are divided into K-4th, 5th-8th, and 9th-12th grade ranges.  There will be exceptions to this when open K-12 teacher sessions will be offered, depending on the topic, the need, and instructor availability.

Spring and fall will also offer day-long programs on selected Mondays and Tuesdays.  These sessions will involve a teacher bringing a group of students as a field trip for a full day of hands-on activities.  Students will learn directly and teachers will be provided materials to help continue related lessons in their classrooms.

Finally, we will provide several week-long half-day workshops to both students and teachers during the summer which will offer up to four separate programs with varied topics and activities.  Due to the Mississippi heat, most summer workshops will take place during weekday mornings, releasing participants around noon for lunch.

A major focus for the SEP will be hydrology - watershed ecology and management, water quality, aquatic ecology, and wetlands. With a facility located on the Tenn-Tom Waterway, with our very own trails and Cypress sloughs, and with a floating laboratory, we are uniquely positioned to educate students and teachers ON water. Many of our field trips and summer workshops will emphasize the importance of water resources and human impacts on them.
