Since at least the turn of the 20th century, women’s rights and feminist movements in Iran have been active in questioning male hierarchy and bringing about social and legal changes that enhance women’s rights and status in the society. This talk analyzes the pre and post revolutionary women’s movements in Iran, with particular emphasis on the ways in which women’s rights was often the source of contention between Iran’s secularizing and Islamizing forces.
