Dr. Beverly Joyce

Assistant Professor of Art

Dr. Joyce’s primary area of expertise is 19th-century European painting and sculpture. The focus of her dissertation was on gender issues in English Pre-Raphaelite art. She has presented this material at professional conferences. Dr. Joyce teaches art history and art appreciation courses in the Art and Design Department.

Dr. Sandra Jordan

Dr. Jordan's expertise is in 17th and 18th century European Art History. She is published in international journals on the iconography of Reformation and Counter-Reformation Italian painting. Her current research agenda includes the relationship between scientific discovery and 18th C. British art (specifically the art produced on Captain Cook's voyages), the impact of ethnographic art on European aesthetic sensibilities, and the Picturesque landscape movement. Beyond her research areas in art history, Dr. Jordan frequently is invited to speak on the topic of leadership.

Instructor, Management Information Systems

Mr. Tollison teaches courses in the Microsoft Suite, computer maintenance, computer networking, electronic commerce and the Linux operating system. His areas of interest include computer programming and open source software. He has experience in designing and maintaining commercial websites as well as administering computer networks in the instructional setting. Tollison conducts research in preparing distance learners for online courses and instructional technology. He is also knowledgeable in areas including the history of computing, the business environment of the computing industry and computer theory including hierarchical structures, Binary mathematics and Boolean logic.

Associate Professor of Marketing and Management

Dr. Larson regularly lectures on all aspects of marketing including consumer behavior, retailing, strategic marketing, customer service, e-commerce and marketing management. She is also the primary instructor for human resource management. Her research interests include Internet retailing, in-home shopping, consumer behavior and perceived risk. Dr. Larson has published articles in “Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice,” Journal of Consumer Service in Marketing and Management,” “Marketing Management Journal” and many conference proceedings. She has significant professional experience in the field of retailing, having worked as an area sales manager for a major regional department store.

Chef Scott teaches at all levels of culinary instruction and oversees the Entrepreneurship Emphasis Area and other hospitality related business courses. Prior to coming to MUW in 2003, the Chef had 30 years of practical experience in the foodservice profession holding positions from Dishwasher to Executive Chef, General Management , Project Consultant, Chef Instructor, and Culinary Program Director. He specializes in the creation of a la carte and buffet/banquet menus, home meal replacement, kitchen and dining room design, human resource management, marketing, fiscal management, and overall troubleshooting of day-to-day operational problems. Chef Scott has worked in more then a dozen states and loves all food but specializes in Western European, Mediterranean, and American Regional Cuisine.

Howell has more than 20 years experience in associate degree nursing education. She has served on the executive boards of the Mississippi Nurses’ Association and the Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing. Howell received the Sigma Theta Tau Award for Excellence in Nursing Education and was recognized by the Mississippi Nurses Association as Nurse Educator of the Year Award from the National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing.

Dr. Balazs’ areas of research specialization include elderly consumer behavior in retail and health care service settings, retirement and migration decisions of the elderly, personal values and their impact on salesperson performance and determinants of ethical behavior of salespeople. Her teaching specialization includes retail management, sales management, principles of marketing and marketing research. Her publications include topics such as “Marketing to the Elderly,” “The Use and Image of Mature Adults in Health Care Advertising,” “Positioning the Retail Shopping Center for Aging Consumers,” “Toward a Better Understanding of the Mature Traveler” and “Health Care Dilemma: What Choices Do the Elderly Have?” Among her numerous areas of professional service are vice president for development for the Academy of Marketing Science and a member of the board of directors for the International Society for Quality of Life Studies. She has received grants from the International Council of Shopping Centers and the Richard D. Irwin Foundation.

History of Popular Music

Dr. Richard Montalto

Dr. Montalto holds degrees in composition from the University of New
Orleans, Tulane University and the University of North Texas. He is the
recipient of numerous awards, including an American Society of
Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) grant to young composers award for his “Symphony for Wind Ensemble,” yearly ASCAP awards since 1982 and a Mississippi Artist Fellowship for his “Symphony #2.” His works have been performed at Carnegie Hall, the Montreaux International Jazz Festival, Symphony Space in New York, the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center, the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States, the International Computer Music Conference and throughout the United States and Europe. He has served as president of the Southeastern Composers’ League and president of the College Music Society Southern Chapter. Montalto has performed on bass across the United States, in South America and in Europe with a number of ensembles, including Harry Connick and the New Orleans Pops. Prior to joining the MUW faculty in 1988, he served as director of the University of New Orleans Jazz Band.

Dr. Ward holds degrees in journalism and sociology as well as public administration from the University of Mississippi and University of Cincinnati. His research interests within the field of public policy and administration include alternative service delivery, public sector productivity, racial profiling and intergovernmental relations. He has published more than 17 journal articles and book chapters on the topics included above. His research has appeared in journals such as “Public Administration Review,” “Public Productivity and Management Review” and “Public Administration Quarterly.” Ward will serve as a symposium editor for the “Journal of Public Affairs Education” and edit a special issue on “Social Equity in Public Service Education and Practice.”

Dr. Whitehead's specialties include world religions, women's spirituality, sacred texts, American literature, and contemporary writing by women. She has published short fiction, the book The Feminist Poetry Movement, and two books for adolescents on Islam.
