The 32nd session of Mississippi Governor’s School under way

When Night FallsCOLUMBUS, Miss. -- Approximately 113 scholars are attending Mississippi Governor’s School (MGS) at Mississippi University for Women through June 22. The theme for this year’s session is Leading with Vision.

This year, MGS is excited to maximize the collaboration of influential community leaders and agencies throughout Columbus and the Golden Triangle. The Lowndes County Habitat for Humanity, Main Street Columbus, R.I.D.E.S. Equestrian Therapy, Palmer Home, Operation Ukraine and several other entities will be partnering with MGS. MGS will also host professionals to educate scholars on career fields as well as provide scholars with opportunities for educational advancement.

MGS is a residential honors program established in 1981 by Gov. William F. Winter and the faculty and administration at MUW. MGS is designed to provide academic, creative and leadership experiences for a limited number of rising high school juniors and seniors who have demonstrated exceptional ability and achievement in academics and community involvement and who show high intellectual, creative and leadership potential. Students will also learn about the various opportunities available at MUW.

Each summer, MGS brings together high ability learners from across the state of Mississippi for a three-week residential collegiate experience that blends cultural, academic, social and recreational components into a rich and natural learning environment. The community of interaction created by the MGS program inspires the love of learning, discovery of self and the desire to use gifts and talents to improve society.

Since its establishment, MGS has provided more than 4,000 students from across the state of Mississippi with a high quality educational experience that has challenged them to grow as individuals. MGS is funded by the Mississippi Legislature, and there is no charge to attend. For more information, please call (662) 241-6096 or e-mail govschool@muw.edu.
