Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity receives noteworthy honors at state conference

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Alpha Omicron Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. at Mississippi University for Women received top honors at its 98th annual state conference recently held in Gulfport.

The fraternity received Superior Chapter of the Year and Highest GPA awards. In addition, George Body of Columbus, Sean Cummings of Clarksdale, Terence Nicholson of West Point, Nick Wright of Eupora and Jeffery Johnson of Memphis, Tenn., received Academic Achievement Awards for maintaining a 3.0 or above.

“It means a lot to know that our chapter had the highest grade point average and that our hard work has not gone unnoticed,” said George Body, chapter president.

Wright also placed second in the oratorical contest and received the Collegiate Member of the Year Award. He will compete on the debate team at the 98th Annual Regional Conference in Biloxi April 12-15. Robert Smith of Columbus placed third in the oratorical contest.

Wright submitted his candidacy for the second vice regional director for the Southern Region. If selected, he will represent all collegiate members at colleges and universities in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Bahamas. Last year, Wright placed first in the state and regional oratorical contests and second in the national oratorical and debate contests.

Dr. Phillip “Flapp” Cockrell, chapter adviser, said, “The chapter members did an outstanding job representing MUW at the conference. I consider it an honor and blessing to advise such an amazing, energetic and dedicated group of young men who reflect the values of our fraternity.”

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is an international service organization that was founded on the campus of Howard University on Jan. 9, 1914. It is considered the "People's Fraternity" because it does not limit brotherhood and service to only one race or demographic background.
