When Night FallsCOLUMBUS, Miss. -- Dr. Phillip Cockrell, director of student life at Mississippi University for Women, has been selected to present his research at two upcoming conferences.

As a recipient of the 2012 Doctoral Student Conference Grant, Cockrell will present at the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education (AABHE) conference in Atlanta, Ga., March 22-24. He will participate in the graduate student session.

Cockrell will also present at the Noel-Levitz and American College Personnel Association 2012 Symposium for the Recruitment and Retention of Students of Color to be held in Denver, Colo., April 18-20. The session is titled The Impact of Upward Bound Programs-Summer Bridge Programs on African-American College Students.

He said, “I’m excited about the opportunity to share the experiences of first-generation, low-income, African-American college students and the impact Upward Bound Programs have on their secondary and post-secondary careers.  I know firsthand the impact Upward Bound Programs have on these students’ experiences.

“As a high school student, I participated in Upward Bound for four years as well as completed the Summer Bridge Program component at Mary Holmes Junior College. The program provided me with the skills and guidance to successfully matriculate to and obtain a degree at Mississippi University for Women.”

Cockrell recently earned his Ph.D. in urban higher education from Jackson State University. He received his master’s in educational leadership−student affairs administration in 2005 from Florida International University and his bachelor of science in family studies at MUW in 2003.

He serves as the graduate advisor for the Alpha Omicron Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and advisor for the National Pan-Hellenic Council, National Society for Leadership and Success and the Young Black Leadership Association. To sign up for W ALERT, visit http://web2.muw.edu/index.php/en/w-alert-get-connected.html.
