TVA Investment Club earns $3,068 in 2010
COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Tennessee Valley Authority Investment Club at Mississippi University for Women recently won an award of $3,068, bringing the clubs total to $48,000 since 2001.
TVA’s Investment Challenge is a partnership between TVA and universities in its service territory that provides a real-world learning experience in portfolio management. The Challenge gives teams of students’ hands-on experience in managing TVA stock portfolios.
“Currently, MUW’s TVA Investment Club has 25 stocks in its portfolio at a value of approximately $350,000,” according to Dr. Andrew Luccassen, assistant professor of finance and economics. “These stocks include Apple, Nike and Starbucks.”
MUW competes with 24 universities across the South including the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, Tennessee-Knoxville and Vanderbilt.
The club meets every two weeks on Fridays to evaluate its portfolio of stocks and decide whether to buy or sell those stocks.
Savannah Tubbs, club president, said the club has helped her become a better leader and has given her an extensive knowledge on the market and stocks.
“I hope other members of the student body can recognize that investing is not a boring chore, but a challenging puzzle that can prepare a person for the real world exchange of money,” Tubbs added.
This year the club toured the Chicago Board of Trade.
Dr. Luccasen, who also serves as the club’s faculty advisor, said, “The trip to the Chicago Board of Trade gave students firsthand knowledge of financial markets and instruments. The lessons and discussions the club had on the trip complemented the tour, making those lessons memorable. Many members of the club are not business majors, but the tour did prepare those students for additional business classes.”
The club used its winnings to pay for airfare and hotel accommodations in Chicago. The club was also able to pay for dinner the first night of their stay in Chicago for authentic deep dish pizza at Pizzeria Uno.
