MUW to host Sonya Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day

COLUMBUS, Miss. – About 60 high school girls and their teachers will participate in the Sonya Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day at Mississippi University for Women on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

The event is being hosted by the Department of Sciences and Mathematics and is organized in honor of Sonya Kovalevsky, a 19th century mathematician and the first woman to receive a doctoral degree in mathematics.

Dr. Dorothy Kerzel, MUW professor of mathematics, said, “The day is intended to increase the interest in and awareness of mathematics in high school girls.”

Check-in will begin at 8:30 in the lobby of Parkinson Hall followed by a welcome, competition exam with prizes (TI-calculators) and small group sessions led by Dr. Jerry Kabell, Dr. Josh Hanes, Janet Robertson, Dr. Bonnie Oppenheimer and Dr. Shaochen Yang. MUW scholarships also will be awarded.

Kerzel added, “The mathematics faculty is excited to be offering this event to students in our area. It will be a fun and informative day of mathematics and we look forward to working with the students and their teachers.”
