MUW Science Enrichment Program offers fall workshops

The Science Enrichment Program (SEP) at Mississippi University for Women continues its workshops this fall to promote the development of science skills among K-12 teachers and students.

Workshops will provide training and hands-on activities through professional development for educators, mathematics outreach and backyard astronomy.

The professional development workshops include five events that will provide a refresher presentation, hands-on lessons for the classroom and a field or lab activity.

Topics and dates:
Workshop 1: Water Resources: Oct. 1
Workshop 2: Ecology: Oct. 22
Workshop 3: Geology and Astronomy 1: Oct 29
Workshop 4: Mathematics: Nov 19
Workshop 5: Microbiology: Dec17

Kenneth Langley, SEP project coordinator, said, “These workshops will boost teacher confidence and allow them to participate in advanced activities and field work to give them additional perspective.”

SEP will continue with more workshops through its Mobile Outreach Program (MOP). Through this program, SEP staff visits a classroom and teaches a lesson. Teacher and administrators may choose from a variety of mathematic topics, depending on students’ needs. MOP visits are only made on Tuesdays in September, October and November.

Langley said students will benefit immediately by learning new lessons and having fun.

SEP will also offer a Backyard Astronomy event that is open to the public. An astronomer will give a presentation and participants will then go outside and view what was covered in the presentation.

The first session is Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Plymouth Bluff. Registration is not required.

Registration for the professional development workshops will close at 5 p.m. the Wednesday before the workshop. Early registration is encouraged. Continuing education units and stipends are available to teachers who attend the workshops.

All programs are free of charge and will be held at Plymouth Bluff Center or Parkinson Hall on the MUW campus. For more information, contact Langley at klangley@as.muw.edu.
