MUW garners recognition from two national publications

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Once again Mississippi University for Women has garnered national recognition by being ranked in the lists of top universities by U.S. News & World Report and Washington Monthly.

The latest rankings by U.S. News place MUW in the top tier of Best Regional Universities. MUW is the highest ranked public Mississippi university in the Southern category.

The institutions that appear in the Best Regional Universities provide a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s programs. The 626 universities in this category are ranked by geographic regions—North, South, Midwest and West.

MUW Interim President Allegra Brigham said, "MUW offers academic excellence for students while enhancing their opportunities for a better quality of life because of their 'W' experiences. In addition to a strong academic environment in small classes taught by professors, MUW faculty and staff help equip students with leadership skills and hearts for civic and community service."

The 350-page 2012 edition of the Best Colleges guidebook is available at USNews.com and will be on newsstands Tuesday, Sept. 20.

In addition to being ranked by U.S. News & World Report, MUW was recently ranked sixth in the country among public master’s universities by Washington Monthly.

Washington Monthly rates schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs) and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country). MUW’s sister institution, Alcorn State University, was ranked fourth.

MUW also was ranked 14th among all masters universities in community service participation and hours served.

Brigham added, "MUW is a university clearly focused on students and providing a well-rounded collegiate experience to position them for success in life."
