Oppenheimer receives MCTM Teacher of the Year award

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Dr. Bonnie Oppenheimer, professor of mathematics at Mississippi University for Women, received the 2010 Mississippi Council of Teachers of Mathematics Teacher of the Year award at the college level.

The Mississippi Council of Teachers of Mathematics presents awards for Teacher of the Year at four levels (elementary, middle school/junior high, high school and college) at its fall conference each year.

Requirements for the College Teacher of the Year Award include a minimum of three years teaching experience in mathematics at the post-secondary level. Nominees are asked to submit information about professional development, professional affiliations, their contributions to mathematics education in the state and an original successful mathematics lesson. Two letters of recommendation help determine the award recipient.

"It is an honor to be chosen as the MCTM 2010 College/University Teacher of the Year.  Mississippi children deserve the best mathematics teachers possible, and my job is to help create them," she said.

Dr. Oppenheimer is currently in her 13th year at MUW as a member of the Department of Sciences and Mathematics. She has been named Phi Kappa Phi Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year, Woman of Achievement by the American Association of University Women, MUW Faculty Member of the Year, faculty nominee for MUW for the Higher Education Appreciation Day/Working for Academic Excellence award and was the Lowndes County Postsecondary Educator of the Year.
