COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women’s Department of Sciences and Mathematics will host the Sonya Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day on Friday, Oct. 15 in Parkinson Hall.
The Sonya Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day will be full of mathematics activities and presentations for high school girls and their teachers. The day’s schedule will include a keynote speaker, a competition exam in which top performers are awarded MUW scholarships and MUW faculty leading hands-on workshop sessions. Lunch is included.
Dr. Dorothy Kerzel, chair of the Department of Sciences and Mathematics, said, “The Sonya Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day is a great opportunity to share mathematics with high school girls. We want to provide experiences that will increase their interest in mathematics and encourage them to continue taking mathematics courses.”
“The mathematics faculty is excited to be offering this event to students in our area. It will be a fun and informative day of mathematics and we look forward to working with the students and their teachers,” Kerzel added.
