MUW nursing students participate in community health fair
COLUMBUS , Miss. - Seven Mississippi University for Women nursing students recently participated in a community health fair for the Mississippi Justice Court Clerk Association.
Janice Giallourakis, assistant professor of nursing, said they were approached by Linder Erby, Lowndes County justice court clerk, about providing the service for the association's two-day conference held in Columbus .
The association has a membership of approximately 175. Giallourakis noted that a majority of the association's membership are women between the ages of 25-62. Students provided blood pressure checks, checked body mass index and other services. They also passed out literature and other useful goodies.
The seven nursing students have completed externships at various hospitals, Giallourakis noted. As part of the externship program, participants learn skills under the supervision of experienced registered nurses in the healthcare setting, experience acceptance in a work situation appropriate to their potential as future registered nurses and assume responsibilities of full-time employees with respect to performance requirements, policies and procedures of a health care agency.
“They really get a wonderful experience,” she said.
