MUW's Department of Health & Kinesiology does fitness testing with Franklin Academy
COLUMBUS , Miss. – Mississippi University for Women's Department of Health & Kinesiology recently completed fall fitness testing for more than 400 elementary students.
In an effort to battle childhood obesity and put a focus on National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, the Department of Health and Kinesiology has partnered with Franklin Academy , the Medical Sciences and Wellness Magnet School , for the third year.
The elementary students were assessed on campus using the Fitnessgram Fitness Test, which is a nationally recognized battery of tests that measures cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition.
Each Franklin student received an individual report about his or her health-fitness status, and the Franklin Academy Physical Education program receives group data about each grade.
Students will be assessed again in April to determine improvement that occurred during the school year.
Dr. Mark Bean, department chair, said, "This is a great event for our students. They get a chance to participate in fitness testing, and we all enjoy our interaction with the Franklin students and faculty."
