MUW hosts Summer Discovery 2010

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women will be hosting Summer Discovery 2010 July 12-16.

Summer Discovery is an educational program that provides gifted students with opportunities to discover their own areas of interest and potential. They will also sharpen their critical thinking and creative skills. Not only will participants get to learn, they will get to interact with other gifted students from around the Columbus area.

The program will be held at Franklin Academy. Kindergarten students will be there from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Grades first through sixth will be there from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Gifted students who have completed grades kindergarten through sixth are eligible for the program. For admission to the program, applicants in grades kindergarten through sixth must participate in their school’s gifted program. For grades kindergarten and first a teacher recommendation will be accepted.

In addition to students learning their potential, teachers will benefit from Summer Discovery. “The program provides internship for teachers working on their master’s in gifted education. They are mentored by certified gifted education teachers and supervised by Dr. Royal Toy,” said Wendy Powers, the graduate assistant for education.
