MUW to host Campus Safety Day

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The department of community living at Mississippi University for Women will host its first Campus Safety Day on Sept. 29.

The event will take place in the parking lot next to the Hogarth Dining Center and will last from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
September is campus fire safety month for colleges and universities across the country, according to Sirena Parker, directory of community living.

“Fire kills, no matter what age. Unfortunately, college students do not realize how fast a fire can grow and then what to do when a fire occurs,” she said. “Community living wants to help students understand that fires can happen in campus-related settings and they need to protect themselves no matter where they live, learn or play.”

Campus Safety Day will include a hands-on mock residence hall room burn, fire extinguisher training, safety booths and giveaways. There will be safety booths from campus and many Columbus agencies.

“We want to reach as many students as possible and increase awareness of fire safety on the MUW campus,” Parker added.

The department of community living has received support from Bob Neal, emergency and fire safety coordinator for the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning; the Columbus fire and police departments and the MUW Police Department.
