New university chorale ensemble to begin performing
COLUMBUS, Miss., - Encore, a new music group at Mississippi University for Women, will present its debut concert Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Omnova Theater located in the Rosenzweig Arts Center. There is no admission charge and the community is welcome to attend.
The group consists of eight singers who will perform selections that span the decades of American popular music from artists such as George Gershwin and Rascal Flatts.
Dr. Debra Atkinson, assistant professor of music education and director of choral activities at MUW, said the group will serve as both a community outreach effort and recruiting tool.
“We are scheduled to sing in February and hope to have more invitations to sing in the Golden Triangle,” said Atkinson. “We perform a wide variety of music that includes vocal jazz, pop classics and current Top 40 hits.”
Members for the 2009 season are Alex Jenkins, Jessi Tidwell, Jodie Griffin, Jami Strickland, Anne Franklin Lamar, Jenni Mitchell, Kelsey Sample and Rick Rogers.
