Professor to contribute to ABC production

COLUMBUS, Miss. - Dr. Van Roberts, assistant professor of communication at Mississippi University for Women, has signed a contract with ABC-CLIO Books to contribute his expertise in film to the library reference text, “Movies and American Culture.”  

Roberts will provide more than 20 entries about films including, “The Big Sleep,” “City Lights” and “Thelma & Louise.”  He will also write about the Cinemascope process, German Expressionism, Slasher films as well as entries on influential directors.

 “I am excited about this opportunity,” said Roberts, who currently writes film reviews for the Commercial Dispatch and the Tuscaloosa Planet Weekly.   

Roberts received his Ph.D., in American history from Mississippi State University. His academic training includes history and media criticism and research interests in film history and criticism. Roberts has 25 years experience in radio, television and film broadcast announcing, editing, production and directing. He is an award-winning feature and spot news writer and a regional freelance movie reviewer.
