MUW Senior Kalich receives culinary scholarship
COLUMBUS, Miss. - Elizabeth Kalich, a senior at
Mississippi University
for Women was recently announced as the recipient of
the Karp Resources
“W” Culinary Entrepreneurship Scholarship.
The Starkville resident was chosen based on her
enrollment as a student
with a culinary entrepreneurship minor, various
academic accomplishments
and letters of recommendation.
Applicants were required to submit a comprehensive
case study in
response to a business problem provided by Karp
Resources. Kalich’s
field research project on the topic of institutional
dining at MUW was a
case study with great potential to initiate positive
change and
innovation.
She is currently pursuing a bachelor of science
degree in culinary arts
with an emphasis in entrepreneurship and will
graduate in May 2009.
Kalich interned in Florida at Amelia Island
Plantation and hopes to one
day own an on-premise/off-premise catering company
in Mississippi.
Karen Karp, founder of Karp Resources, has
significant ties to MUW as
she co-wrote the minor degree curriculum in culinary
entrepreneurship,
which debuted at the university in 2002. Karp was
the first instructor
in the program and taught two classes during its
debut semester.
“This scholarship is a great way for me to give back
to Mississippi
University for Women and to recognize innovative
students and future
culinary entrepreneurs,” Karp said. “Elizabeth is a
truly promising
student, and I hope this award helps her to pursue
her academic and
professional passions.”
The scholarship, established in 2005, was created by
Karp Resources in
an effort to aid an MUW student with a culinary
entrepreneurship minor
whose educational future was in jeopardy due to the
devastation caused
by Hurricane Katrina. The scholarship has since
continued and has opened
up to all MUW students with a minor in culinary
entrepreneurship.
