Whitehead’s story chosen for Best of the Web
anthology
COLUMBUS, Miss. -- The short story “The Split” by
Dr. Kim
Whitehead, instructor of English and religious
studies at Mississippi
University for Women, was selected for Dzanc Books’
first annual print
anthology Best of the Web, released in July.
Originally appearing in Terrain.org, Whitehead’s
story was one of 58
stories, poems and essays chosen from approximately
1,000 works
submitted by editors of online magazines.
Best of the Web is the first print anthology to
represent a wide range
of online literature on an annual basis. Presented
in the style of other
comprehensive collections like Best American Short
Stories, the 2008
anthology was hailed as “heartily significant” by
the Los Angeles
Times, while NewPages.com said it “could not have
come at a better
time for online literary publishing.”
Whitehead’s “The Split” is part of a short story
cycle set on a
farm in Mississippi’s Black Belt Prairie. Another
story in the cycle
appears in the current issue of the online magazine
Third Reader, while
another is forthcoming in the fall issue of Freight
Stories.
