Smith receives award for his short story
COLUMBUS, Miss. – Dr. Michael F. Smith, assistant
professor of English at Mississippi University for
Women, was recently awarded the Brick Streets Press
Short Story Award for his story “Chasing Rabbits.”
The award was judged by acclaimed Mississippi writer
Barry Hannah,
author of numerous award-winning works and author of
“Sick Soldier at
Your Door,” a new novel that will debut in the
summer of 2008.
Smith’s award was funded by the Arts Council of
Clinton. He was presented the award on March 8 at
the Barry Hannah Writers’ Workshop held in Clinton.
Smith participated in the workshop activities,
including giving a reading of his award-winning
story to the workshop participants.
He is the author of a dozen previously published
stories and his work has garnered past awards such
as the Transatlantic Review Award for Fiction and
the Alabama Arts Council Award for Literature.
Smith teaches creative writing at MUW, and in June
of 2008 he will lead a fiction writing workshop at
The Abbey in Pontlevoy, France.
