Smith receives award for his short story

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Dr. Michael F. Smith, assistant professor of English at Mississippi University for Women, was recently awarded the Brick Streets Press Short Story Award for his story “Chasing Rabbits.”

The award was judged by acclaimed Mississippi writer Barry Hannah,
author of numerous award-winning works and author of “Sick Soldier at
Your Door,” a new novel that will debut in the summer of 2008.

Smith’s award was funded by the Arts Council of Clinton. He was presented the award on March 8 at the Barry Hannah Writers’ Workshop held in Clinton. Smith participated in the workshop activities, including giving a reading of his award-winning story to the workshop participants.

He is the author of a dozen previously published stories and his work has garnered past awards such as the Transatlantic Review Award for Fiction and the Alabama Arts Council Award for Literature.

Smith teaches creative writing at MUW, and in June of 2008 he will lead a fiction writing workshop at The Abbey in Pontlevoy, France.
