Brown named director of the Mississippi Governor’s
School
COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Kate Brown, associate director
for the Roger F. Wicker Center for Creative
Learning, has replaced Dr. Bob Seney as director for
the Mississippi Governor’s School. Although the
appointment was official in August, the 2007 summer
session will be Brown’s first as director.
The Governor’s School program was created in 1981
and is housed on the MUW campus. According to Brown,
it was created “to provide a challenging
college-like experience for high school students who
demonstrate high intellectual, creative and
leadership potential.”
The Power of Leadership-Making an Impact in Your
Community will be the theme for the 2007 session.
“There will be an emphasis on developing skills for
leadership and community action and involvement,”
Brown said.
Brown has set many new goals for herself as
director. “My goals for Governor's School include
building awareness of the program statewide through
recruitment, publicity and networking, increasing
the size of the applicant pool to ensure
representation from all areas of the state,
developing a distinguished speaker series showcasing
the contributions of Mississippians to the state and
nation and increasing funding for the program.”
She has already taken steps toward her goal for
increasing awareness of the program by attending
several conferences across the state this year to
promote Governor’s School. These conferences include
the Mississippi Association for Gifted Children
conference, Mississippi Association for School
Administrators conference and Mississippi Counselors
Association conference.
The program is open to rising juniors and seniors
across the state and is a three- week, residential
program. The 2007 session will be held June 3-22.
