MUW senior art exhibition opens Nov. 14

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Artwork by eight Mississippi University for Women students will be showcased on campus, beginning Tuesday, Nov. 14 and will run through Friday, Dec. 8.

The senior art exhibition is dedicated to the fall 2006 graduates of MUW’s art and design program. An opening reception will be held Thursday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. in Shattuck Hall.

All students receiving a bachelor of fine arts are required to participate in the senior exhibition. Any student receiving a bachelor of arts in art may also participate.

Each student is expected to exhibit work that demonstrates his or her achievement as advanced students in a specific area including graphic design, interior design or studio art. Studio art students are expected to have a concentrated body of work within one emphasis: painting/drawing, printmaking, photography or crafts.

The exhibition will include artwork from:

Amanda Francis, a graduate from Hancock County School and a native of Bay St. Louis. She is receiving a BFA in studio art with a concentration on painting/drawing. Francis said, “I would like others to recognize the delicate atmosphere of my work without simply overlooking it. I would like them to almost interact with the pieces and feel a sense of connection or curiosity.”

Jessica Johnson, a graduate from Long Beach High School, is receiving a BFA in interior design. She said, “The senior show is important because it allows a student to show their hard work, dedication and progression in the art field to family, friends, fellow students and to the local community.”

Sarah Rose, a graduate from North West Rankin High School in Brandon, is receiving a BFA in studio art with a concentration in painting. Rose described her work as a “self portrait” as much as it can be seen as an illustration of her life experience. “I just want others to see my work with open eyes and to read it with open minds to just see what they see.”

Nathan Wilson, a graduate from Madison Central High School, is receiving a BFA in graphic design. Wilson described the senior show process as “stressful.” “It allows us to show what our learning experience at The W is all about.”

Amy Russell, a graduate from Booneville High School, is receiving a BFA in art education. Russell said the most important aspect to her art is vision. “I have always thought eyes told a lot about a person. The eyes can’t lie. So my art is about seeing. Seeing what I see, seeing color, seeing what I do.”

Shasta Nance, a graduate from Winston Academy in Louisville, is receiving a BFA in graphic design. Nance said, “The senior show is our shining moment before going into the real world.”

Jennifer Massey, a graduate from North Pontotoc High School and native of Thaxton, is receiving a BFA in art education.

Maria Williamson, a native Okinawa, Japan, is receiving a BFA in art education.

The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on the exhibit or to arrange visiting times, contact the Department of Art and Design at (662) 329-7341 or email Alex Stelioes-Wills, gallery director, at aswills@muw.edu.
