Troubadour Social Club hosts auction for
Tupelo’s Race for the Cure
COLUMBUS, Miss. -- On Friday,
Sept. 29, the Troubadour Social Club at
Mississippi University for Women will host
the first “Bidding to Beat Breast Cancer”
silent auction for the Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation’s Race for the Cure in
Tupelo in October. The auction will be held
at the Cochran Ballroom on the MUW campus at
5 p.m.
“Breast cancer is a disease that
touches everyone,” said Troubadour
Philanthropy Chair Aubree Peek, who has had
an aunt and cousin diagnosed with the
disease. “Several of our social club members
have also had close relatives with breast
cancer.” She said the fundraiser is a fun
way to involve the community and campus in
the club’s fundraising for their
philanthropy. The auction will include items
such as gift cards to restaurants and local
spas, artwork, health and beauty gift
baskets, furniture, football tickets and MUW
items.
Beth Honeycutt, of Columbus, who is a member
of the board of directors for the Susan G.
Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s
Race for the Cure®,
will be honored with the first Troubadour
award for breast cancer advocacy, which will
be given to a member in the community who
has raised awareness of breast cancer. Peek
said the Troubadour Social Club is very
excited about honoring Honeycutt, especially
because the club’s goal of raising funds for
the Race for the Cure.
In 2005, several Troubadours
members participated in the Race for the
Cure and raised more than $200. This year,
the club has higher goals. “Last year we
raised money to Race for the Cure and raised
awareness of breast cancer on campus,” Peek
said. “This year, we have a fundraising goal
of $5,000 to donate to the Race and to
extend that awareness to the community of
Columbus, as well as the MUW students.”
Up
to 75 percent of the net proceeds from
Tupelo’s Race for the Cure will remain in
North Mississippi and will be used to fund
breast cancer screening, education and
treatment programs for medically
under-served women in a 15-county area.
MUW communications professor
Eric Harlan will emcee the event, and food
will be catered by students at MUW’s
Culinary Arts Institute.
