Peveler switches gears as cyclist and author

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Dr. Will Peveler is an assistant professor of health and kinesiology at Mississippi University for Women, but during his time off he switches gears as a cyclist.

Peveler’s love for bikes is now allowing him to travel down a different road.

His book, “The Complete Guide to Road Cycling and Road Racing,” will hit stores soon.

The book is the initial phase of a book contract Peveler recently signed with Mcgraw-Hill and Ragged Mountain Press.

“I feel completely amazed that I was able to sign a contract with such a well respected publisher. I have published a number of works in scientific journals, but I have always wanted to write a mainstream book,” Peveler said. “This would allow me to mix the scientific knowledge with the practical application. Ever since I read `Serious Cycling’ and `High-Tech Cycling’ by Edmund R. Burke, I have always wanted to write my own book. I just never thought I would be able to pull it off.”

Even though Peveler is a fan of Burke’s books, he points out that “if you are not an exercise physiologist they are hard to follow.”

Peveler, who has raced bikes since 1994 and also has coached cycling at the collegiate level, said his book is written in a way “that everyone can understand and put it to use.”

Dr. Mark Bean, department chair and professor of health and kinesiology, said, “This is a tremendous accomplishment for Dr. Peveler…This book will allow him to showcase his expertise in cycle training and racing.”

Peveler, who joined MUW in 2003, plans to focus his next book on training for triathlons and duathlons--his other loves. He’s been involved with these activities since 2000.
