2006 Economic Conference brings experts to MUW
COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women
College of Business and the Columbus-Lowndes Development
Link will host the 2006 Economic Conference on Thursday,
Aug.17, from 8 a.m. to noon.
The event will be held in the Nissan Auditorium located in
Parkinson Hall on the MUW campus. A welcome from David
Sanders, chairman of the board for the Link, will begin at 8
a.m.
Dr. Anne Balazs, interim dean for the College of Business,
said “This is the second year in a row we have hosted the
Economic Conference. The TVA Investment Club worked hard
last year to make it a success and we have joined forces
with the Link to sponsor this year’s program.”
She also noted “The caliber of speakers and relevance of
their topics is impressive. The conference coincides with
the first day of classes, but we hope that MUW faculty,
staff and students as well as community members can make
time in their day to attend.”
Dr. Bob Neal will speak about “The Economy of Mississippi
and Lowndes County.” Neal is the senior economist with the
Center for Policy Research and Planning of the Mississippi
Institutions for Higher Learning in Jackson.
“What’s Up (or Down) with Female Participation in the Labor
Force” will be presented by Dr. Julie Hotchkiss, research
economist and policy adviser at the Federal Reserve Bank in
Atlanta.
The last speaker of the conference will be Gary Swoope. He
serves as deputy director and COO for the Mississippi
Development Authority and will speak about “Issues and
Opportunities Affecting Economic Development in
Mississippi.”
Balazs said, “We look forward to another successful
conference with expert insight into the economic future of
the state and region.”
The conference is free and open to the public. For more
information, contact the MUW College of Business at (662)
