MUW prepares for Welcome Week; housing applications up
By Jill D. O’Bryant
COLUMBUS, Miss. -- When Mississippi University for Women
students move into the residence halls Aug. 13, they will be
welcomed with almost two weeks of fun activities. Final
touches are being put on Welcome Week 2006 as the university
also prepares for an increase in the number of students in
the residence halls.
Chris Holland, director of community living, said that the
university currently has 610 assignments for housing
compared to 570 this time last year.
“I credit this influx with the wonderful job that the
university is doing as a whole to recruit students who are
interested in what MUW has to offer,” Holland said. “On our
end, I believe that students are attracted to the services
and resources we are offering in the halls and the interest
harbored in the new freshman community in Kincannon.”
Kincannon, which will house all freshman students, will have
offices on the first floor and more activity space for
students to meet and have programs. Holland feels that with
professional staff and a 24-hour front desk operation in
place the students and their parents will feel very
comfortable with the setup that includes males and females
on separate floors.
Community Living will offer more movies on its movie channel
this year, an electronic laundry reader on every laundry
machine, free copies of The Commercial Dispatch, Clarion
Ledger and USA Today in every hall and more programming
options geared toward interests and issues that students are
dealing with.
MUW’s Division of Student Services has added some new events
for this year’s Welcome Week including a Traditions 101
program that will help the students understand about the
university’s deep traditions and a program called Funny
Money that will teach students how to manage their money
wisely.
In addition, the students can enjoy a range of events
including an alcohol education program, a game show and a
coffeehouse featuring Brice Miller, a musician who evacuated
to Columbus from New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina
last year.
Some of the returning events include Freshmen Serenade, a
university tradition that concludes with cookies at the
President’s Home, as well as the opportunity for the entire
freshmen class to participate in a community service
activity.
“Welcome Week is an exciting time for our new and returning
students to get acquainted with campus and with each other,”
said Wahnee Sherman, assistant vice president for student
services. “We are providing over 40 activities for new
students to help them become connected to MUW.”
Welcome Week isn’t the only way new students have had the
chance to learn more about MUW. The university also provided
four orientation sessions – two for freshmen and two for
transfer students – during the summer.
“It is important for new students to attend orientation
because it assists them in their transition to being
students at MUW by providing them information and connecting
them to the campus,” Sherman said.
During the orientation sessions, students and family members
learned more about the different opportunities to be
involved on campus and what academic life would be like and
registered for their classes.
Sherman said more students attended the orientation sessions
this summer than the last two summers. Also, more than 95
percent of the students who participated rated orientation
as a positive experience for them.
“We are very much looking forward to the start of the
2006-2007 academic year,” said MUW President Claudia A.
Limbert. “It should be an exciting year.”
