MUW receives $1 million grant to assist area entrepreneurs

COLUMBUS, MISS. –Mississippi University for Women recently received an approximately $1,000,000 Congressionally-directed grant from the Small Business Administration to assist individuals who want to start or enhance their business.

The Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative will focus on economic development, according to MUW President Claudia A. Limbert, who said U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran was instrumental in helping MUW obtain the grant.

Sen. Cochran said, "I am pleased that federal funds are being provided to Mississippi University for Women to help foster opportunities for individuals who are seeking to start new businesses or grow their existing ones. MUW is particularly suited to provide assistance to aspiring women entrepreneurs."

Limbert said, “This initiative will further the impressive economic development taking place in the Golden Triangle, and we look forward to working with the economic leaders in this area.”

Columbus Mayor Jeffrey Rupp added, “With this investment in the future, Mississippi will have a resource which will bring special focus and attention to the state and make MUW an even stronger institution.”

Dr. Joyce Hunt, MUW emerita professor of management, said, “This is a great opportunity for MUW to help strengthen our region’s economic development by assisting individuals who want to start, grow and ensure success of their businesses.”

According to data released in 2004 by the U.S. Census Bureau, there are an estimated 10.6 million privately-held businesses in the United States that are wholly or partially owned by women.

Since its inception, MUW has been dedicated to the needs of women and has placed significance on raising the status of women in Mississippi and the South. MUW is committed to providing men and women with an education that emphasizes academic and leadership preparation.

Limbert said, “Our heritage and decades of leadership addressing women’s issues uniquely positions MUW to aid women to transition from employees of businesses to becoming business owners.”
