MUW receives $1 million grant to assist area entrepreneurs
COLUMBUS, MISS. –Mississippi University for Women recently
received an approximately $1,000,000
Congressionally-directed grant from the Small Business
Administration to assist individuals who want to start or
enhance their business.
The Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative will focus on
economic development, according to MUW President Claudia A.
Limbert, who said U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran was instrumental in
helping MUW obtain the grant.
Sen. Cochran said, "I am pleased that federal funds are
being provided to Mississippi University for Women to help
foster opportunities for individuals who are seeking to
start new businesses or grow their existing ones. MUW is
particularly suited to provide assistance to aspiring women
entrepreneurs."
Limbert said, “This initiative will further the impressive
economic development taking place in the Golden Triangle,
and we look forward to working with the economic leaders in
this area.”
Columbus Mayor Jeffrey Rupp added, “With this investment in
the future, Mississippi will have a resource which will
bring special focus and attention to the state and make MUW
an even stronger institution.”
Dr. Joyce Hunt, MUW emerita professor of management, said,
“This is a great opportunity for MUW to help strengthen our
region’s economic development by assisting individuals who
want to start, grow and ensure success of their businesses.”
According to data released in 2004 by the U.S. Census
Bureau, there are an estimated 10.6 million privately-held
businesses in the United States that are wholly or partially
owned by women.
Since its inception, MUW has been dedicated to the needs of
women and has placed significance on raising the status of
women in Mississippi and the South. MUW is committed to
providing men and women with an education that emphasizes
academic and leadership preparation.
Limbert said, “Our heritage and decades of leadership
addressing women’s issues uniquely positions MUW to aid
women to transition from employees of businesses to becoming
business owners.”
