MUW alumnae Garrett, Mims to head alumni relations
The two professors emeritae
combine for 54 years of service
COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Dr. Barbara Ann Garrett and Dr. Martha Jo
Ballard Mims have been appointed interim special assistants
to the president for alumni relations at Mississippi
University for Women. Both are graduates of MUW and will
work directly with their fellow alumni in these positions,
according to MUW President Claudia A. Limbert.
“These are two outstanding alumnae who have excellent
working relationships with their fellow alumni, and as
professors emeritae they represent 54 years of combined
service to MUW,” said Limbert. “I cannot think of two
individuals who are more respected, and I know they are
committed to moving our university forward.”
Mims graduated from MUW in 1964 with a degree in home
economics education. She also received a master’s degree in
home economics education and a degree in secondary education
from MUW. She earned a Ph.D. from Florida State University.
Mims taught at MUW from 1970 to 2000 and is professor
emerita of human sciences.
She also served as interim alumni director in the past.
“My earlier experience in alumni relations gave me a deep
appreciation of the importance of this component of our
university program,” said Mims. “Alumni play a critical role
in the health of any university, and I look forward to
working with fellow MUW alumni as we seek to serve and
support our alma mater.”
Garrett graduated from MUW in 1956 with a degree in physical
education. She received her certificate in physical therapy
from Duke University and a master’s degree in physical
education from Mississippi State University. She also holds
an Ed.D. from Mississippi State. Garrett taught at MUW from
1967 to 1991 and is professor emerita of health and
kinesiology.
“I am always willing to serve this university,” said
Garrett. “All of my experiences here as a student, alumna,
faculty member and administrator have been enriching beyond
measure. I will continue to work in support of this
institution, the students it serves and its future.”
Mims’ and Garrett’s new positions are effective immediately.
They replace Patsy McDaniel, who is no longer serving as
director of alumni relations.
In addition to Mims and Garrett, the Office of Alumni
Relations continues to be staffed by Carol Newell and Becky
Jenkins, administrative assistants.
