Joyce chairs session at international College Art
Association conference
COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Dr. Beverly Joyce, assistant
professor in the Art and Design department at
Mississippi University for Women, recently returned
from the annual international College Art
Association conference, where she chaired a session,
hosted a mentoring event and organized a student
center.
These activities were her responsibilities as a
member of CAA’s Student and Emerging Professional
Committee (SEPC). The College Art Association is an
international organization, serving artists, art
historians and museum professionals. This year’s
conference was held in Boston in February.
Dr. Joyce chaired the roundtable session “What Can
CAA Do for You?” which featured various members of
CAA committees and affiliated committees and
addressed issues pertinent to SEPC’s constituency.
She also was the primary organizer of a new event
for the conference, titled “Conversations with…”
The guest speakers this year were Saralyn Reece
Hardy, director of the Spencer Museum of Art at the
University of Kansas and formerly director of
museums and visual arts at the National Endowment
for the Arts, and Dr. Bruce Altshuler, director of
museum studies at New York University. The speakers
discussed their career paths as an alternative way
to mentor young professionals. Dr. Joyce
co-organized this event with David Little, director
of education at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
This event took place in the student center hosted
by the SEPC. Besides the panel sessions, the CAA
conference also is the primary site for job
interviews in academe for art professionals. Dr.
Joyce worked with the CAA administration to develop
the Center as a haven for job seekers at the
conference.
