MUW International Series brings scholar to campus
COLUMBUS, Miss – Dr. J. Gill Holland, professor emeritus of
English at Davidson College in North Carolina, will be the
guest speaker for Mississippi University for Women’s
International Series focus on China.
The first lecture titled “Magic and Memory in Traditional
China, Stories, Poems, and a Quintessential Moment in
Chinese Theater” will be on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at noon in
Painter Hall 209.
The second lecture titled “Reflections of Traditional
Chinese Literature in Demonstrations in Tiananmen Square
1989” will be on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Nissan
Auditorium located in Parkinson Hall. This presentation will
be held in cooperation with the MUW Honors College.
Holland has taught at Duke University, the University of
Houston and the University of Redlands. He has studied
Mandarin and classical Chinese at Stanford University and in
Taiwan and Beijing.
In addition to articles on English and American literature
of the 19th and 20th centuries, he has published a book of
translations of classical Chinese poetry and two books of
his own on poems and also articles and reviews in Norwegian
literature and art.
The annual International Series focuses on one country in
the world and brings in outside scholars for a series of
presentations. The program is made possible through the
National Endowment for the Humanities through the
Mississippi Humanities Council.
