MUW student Adam Burns nominated for Pushcart Prize
COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women
student Adam Burns of Louisville was recently
nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
Burns, a junior English major with a creative
writing concentration, received the nomination for
his story “Obsession,” that was published by
Chickflicksezine, an on-line literary magazine.
The Pushcart Prize has been around for about 25
years. To be nominated one must first be published
in a national magazine. Writers are nominated by
magazine editors or contributing editors of the
“Pushcart Prize Anthology.” Only six works are
allowed to be nominated each year.
Dr. Bebe Barefoot, assistant professor of English,
said the Pushcart Prize is considered a professional
writer league, one which not many undergraduates are
a participant.
Dr. Kendall Dunkelberg, MUW English professor and
also a past Pushcart Prize nominee, said “It means
that Adam’s story is among the cream of the crop of
all that has been published in the U.S. in the past
year, including many well-published writers.”
Dunkelberg said, “We are very proud of his
achievement and wish him the best of luck in the
final round of competition.”
